Abstract

The book Guslarke i sviračice na tradicionalnim instrumentima u Srbiji ‒ identifikacija zvukom (Gusle female players and female players on traditional instruments in Serbia ‒ identification by sound) by ethnomusicologist Iva Nenić was published in 2019, and it was based on her PhD thesis defended on the Faculty of Music in Belgrade in 2015. This book is the very first ethnomusicological study on female performances on traditional instruments in Serbia and it represents a significant contribution and a breakthrough of a topic which, somehow, eluded focus of local academia within the framework contemporary theories of ideology, identity and gender performativity.

Author Biography

Ana Petrović, PhD student, Department of Ethnomusicology, Faculty of Music, University of Arts in Belgrade

Ana Petrović (Živčić) holds B.A. and M.A. degrees and is currently a student of doctoral studies at the Ethnomusicology Department, Faculty of Music in Belgrade. She is working as a Teaching Assistant at the same department. She is a member of the ICTM Study Group for the Music and Dance of South Eastern Europe. Her Ph.D. research is based on the analysis of music articulation components in the traditional vocal expression of Serbs from the Pešter plateau.
